I was hoping to bank in on the horrid cover and back panel as I picked this guy up off the shelves of my local Blockbuster. But, I learned after about 45 seconds of viewing that this was not going to be a shlock-fest as I’d hoped. But, it did turn into a wonderfully enchanting independent film about a group of public making sense of themselves and of a world that has fallen to pieces around them. The backgrounds of the main font are slowly unveiled even as their journey pushes them forwards, following the only thing they can; the voices they hear over radio waves.

Again, don’t be fooled into thinking that 20 YEARS LATER (must be titled Like Moles, Like Rats) or the tag-line of ‘AFTER THE BOMBS. AFTER THE PLAGUES. BEFORE THE UNKNOWN’ has anything to do with the movie. It’s not Planet of the Apes, it’s not Soylent Green, it’s not I Am Legend, and it’s not Children of Men.

Some honest time and like has been place into this film, and it deserves respect.

Zillions of logical flaws–public are way too clean, trimmed, and civil. Mostly, they’re just too plump–are supplies running low or not? Was here or was here not a nuclear cataclysm so fantastic that it really ruined society and blighted agriculture, and if so…?

As the other reviewers have said, “Post-Apocalyptic” nearly requires the adjective “terrible”. This is even of poorer quality than that. In addition to an absolutely illogical plot thread (and linked stock caricatures–insane sisters/adopted daughters of “wicked witch”)we also have actual fairyland style key with a psycho-mystic twist courtesy of a cheesy Black “shaman”. Imagine Lionel Richie blathering platitudes in Morgan Freeman’s very blandest voice.

And for all that, Tara Nevins’ rendition of “Stars Fell on Alabama” is worth the rental.
