“Blackest Night” was a grand achievement for the Green Lantern franchise. It brought the long-brewing War of Set alight storyline to a head and propelled Hal Jordan and the GLC to the forefront of a major companionship-wide event. As the “Brightest Day” dawned, fans couldn’t help wondering what would come next. Could the franchise maintain its momentum or would it wander directionless? Thankfully, Geoff Johns shows that Hal and the GLC aren’t out of the woods yet…

“Green Lantern: Brightest Day” opens shortly after the conclusion of “Blackest Night”. Nekron and his band of Black Lanterns have been defeated and the War of Set alight is over. The Green Lantern Corps now starts another round of post-war rebuilding even as maintaining a vague stop-fire with the other Corps. As Hal wonders how long the stop-fire will last, one of the loose ends from the recent conflict resurfaces.

During the Battle of Coast City, the dread entity Parallax was abducted by an unknown individual. That same individual is now targeting the other emotional entities, who are converging on Earth in response to the White Entity’s awakening. Knowing actual how perilous these creatures are, Hal resolves to get to them first. But he can’t do it alone. The New Guardians must renew their alliance and stop their unknown adversary before his actions ruin the fragile peace.

The book is a slower read than “Blackest Night” and understandably so as the latter was the culmination of years of setup. Even as it does drag in places and deals with the have a row, the main focus here is world building and setting up “War of the Green Lanterns”. It adds to the mythology and the revelations of “Blackest Night”, from the emotional entities to the Indigo Tribe. Johns also continues to flesh out font like Atrocitus and Larfleeze, giving them depth beyond mere avatars of rage and avarice. Doug Mahnke remains on-board as the series artist and he is the perfect successor to ex-artist Ivan Reis.

Blackest Night is a hard act to stay on, but Brightest Day does so nicely. I don’t reckon Brightest Day is reasonably as action packed as Blackest Night, but it is nonetheless excellently written and perfectly illustrated. I especially like the in depth character developments for Attrocitus and Larfleeze, who we really come to care for to some degree. And it’s ALWAYS nice to see the interactions between Carol Ferris/Star Sapphire and Hal Jordan. The artwork, both from the tan and pencils, is spectacular on every single page, and adds tremendously to the tale, which really takes a step back from the greater mystery that is happening in the main Brightest Day tale line. But in all honesty, my absolute favorite part of the book was the small origin tale for the feline Red Lantern, Dex-Starr. I dredge up thinking when I first saw his character, is that Red Lantern a CAT!? Indeed, it was. And this provides a small small back tale for how he became a Red Lantern. And let me tell you, the art and writing captured the emotions PURRfectly. See what I did here? LOL I literally welled up reading that part, and it just showed me how absolutely talented he is, that Geoff Johns can write something that seemingly silly, and make it incredible. All in all, this is another fantastic installment in the Green Lantern saga, and if you’re a fan of the GL mythos, then you won’t be disappointed by this.

Thankfulness so much for your time folks.
    Sincerely, R.A. McDowell
